Charles C. Miller oral history, 1968.

In this interview, Charles C. Miller shares his observations of the New York State sugar beet industry. Topics include: his impressions and expectations of grower interest in sugar beets; the procurement of a sugar beet acreage allotment from the USDA, including the contributions of the Redevelopment Area Organization of Cayuga County, N.Y. and of Charles Brannan, former Secretary of Agriculture; the positive and negative factors influencing PepsiCo's decision to build a refinery in Montezuma, N.Y.; the selection of the management of the Empire State Sugar Company and the division of authority between the subsidiary and the parent company; the use of GLF (later Agway) employees to encourage farmers to sign contracts with the refinery; his impressions of PepsiCo's machinery lease program; the procurement by Empire State Sugar of migrant labor; hiring fieldmen; the relationship between the management of Empire State Sugar and the directors of the Finger Lakes Sugar Beet Growers Association; and problems encountered during the first year of commercial sugar beet production (1965). Also included are Mr. Miller's impressions of Charles Lavis, John Klett, and Mark Barrett.
